In Brooklyn, New York, 13,165 people including worldwide media outlets packed the Barclays Center. To watch a press conference. After hip hop artists and New York legends Swiss Beats and Doug E Fresh warmed up the crowd, Showtime VP Stephen Espinoza [who McGregor publicly and repeatedly dubbed “Weasel” after blaming him for McGregor’s mic being cut at the inaugural Mayweather/McGregor Press Conference in Los Angeles] was pulled from the stage, of his own event, prematurely as his speech was completely inaudible under the furious boos and jeers of the pro-Irish crowd.
The heavily Irish-American New York crowd then erupted with the entrance of “The Notorious” Conor McGregor, one day before his 29th birthday, as if welcoming Caesar back to Rome. “No fronting, I’ve never seen anything like this” Leonard Ellerbe, Mayweather Promotions CEO added.
Credentialed media at these events are instructed and warned repeatedly to remain neutral and never applaud or cheer for a specific fighter.
Even the media were standing on top of their chairs, many cheering and screaming.
“The Vegas oddsmakers have the over under on projected buys at 4.9 million. If this does those kind of numbers, Conor can retire. Hell I might retire if this does 4.9 million [PPV buys], and I’ve learned never to doubt Conor McGregor” said UFC President Dana White.
The entrance of Floyd “Money” Mayweather, draped in an Irish flag, was met with disdain from the massive crowd. With a shirtless McGregor slowly prowling around Mayweather as he spoke, like a lion circling his prey, much of Mayweather’s words, like Espinoza before him, were inaudible over the furry of the those in attendance.
You could feel the electricity in the air crawling on your skin. It was clear something was going to happen.Embracing the villain role, Mayweather later started throwing stacks of his famous “Mayweather Money” in the air. But proving too much for Floyd once again, McGregor picked up some of the cash that had fallen to the stage in front of his feet, “These are fookin’ ones! They’re fookin’ ones!”
All Hell, as they say, broke loose right after that with Team Mayweather rushing Team McGregor just as Floyd “snuck out the back door” running far away down the massive catwalk shadow boxing on stage as the two teams, surrounding McGregor and Dana White, continued to brawl.
“It’s even in the contract that Conor can not touch Floyd before the actual fight. If that happened, Floyd would sue for millions and Floyd would win” explained White.
Even at the media only post-conference, conference, McGregor walked in to cheers and applause, while Mayweather later walked in to relative silence literally requesting applause from the media only crowd twice.
“Floyd would be crazy to go to Ireland [for a press conference] even London is crazy, and that was as close as he would get”, added Dana White.
New York has the Mets, Yankees, Islanders, Rangers, Knicks, Nets, Jets, and Giants. Tonight, however, they all took a knee as “The City” received and celebrated it’s King.
