Much too often, the news we hear about veterans is not very good, from long lines at Veteran Administration hospitals to high unemployment figures for the men and women who have served our country when they return home.

But this story reminds us that there are many grateful people out there who want to help our veterans and our active duty men and women, and many of them actually step up and in their own way show their gratitude to those who are serving their country and or who have served in the military.

Beginning Monday, Feb. 29, and continuing through Saturday, March 5, the folks at Liberty Tax Service, 6509 South Transit Rd., Lockport, will demonstrate their patriotism and salute veterans and active military with free tax preparation to mark “Military and Veterans Appreciation Week.”

“We want to give something back to honor the men and women who bravely defend our freedom, our family and friends, and the American way of life,” said Edwin Garey, owner of the Liberty Tax office in Lockport, in a statement.  “We look forward to helping them prepare their taxes.  Tax advice is always free regarding military service tax issues.  Just call us and ask.”  The free week of tax preparation will be available at participating Liberty Tax Service offices.

Michael Gawel, a tax accountant who works at the Lockport office and whose youngest son, Patrick, is an active duty United States Marine, said he is proud to be able to help veterans and active duty military deal with Uncle Sam on tax matters.  He said he is looking forward to helping them get the best return possible.

“I’m very proud of my son and all of the young men and women who are serving our country,” said Gawel.  “This special free preparation week is a way of showing just how appreciative we are for the sacrifices they make to protect our freedom.”

Folks who are interested in having their returns prepared for free can call 866-871-1040 or visit http://www.libertytax.com/ or libertytaxlockport.com for a list of Liberty Tax offices.

Far Too Often, Promises Have Proved Empty; Niagara Falls Needs Progress And Strategic Planning

By Tony Farina Promises are nice and they bring hope for the future. But unfortunately, most of the time, promises have fallen flat for the City of Niagara Falls, some succeeding but many turning out to be empty promises and major disappointments. At this point, Niagara Falls doesn’t need more failed promises. What the city needs is progress to build a better future and a plan to make it work. City leadership must bring it all together. While there are promises to build a better future on the table and being talked about, like Centennial Park and the Niagara Digital

Governor Issues Response To McMurray’s Letter on Slag Concerns

By tony Farina · August 4, 2026

By Tony Farina The radioactive slag bubbling up across Niagara County in recent weeks, triggering state and federal testing and some remedial work and family relocations, is the ongoing and seemingly never-ending legacy of the environmental desecration of the past 100-plus years by massive corporations dumping toxic waste that was the subject of Christen Civiletto’s book Thundering Waters. “What we have again is an environmental storm,” said attorney and former Grand Island Supervisor Nate McMurray, a candidate for election to the 45th District State Assembly seat now open because of the retirement of Angelo Morinello. McMurray will run for the
